Today is the last day of July and it has been quite a month! What with spring flooding finally receding, record-breaking heat, smoke from Canadian fires, and many new insects (some with the ability to penetrate even our finest mesh screens.
What will August look like? Let’s time travel back a few summers to get an idea of what might be the same and what things have changed for good.
Five summers ago, our garden was in full production mode. This year it’s finally catching up from its late planting. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are showing up at all the local Farmers’ Markets and we are eating colorful foods that are healthy and taste great!
Penn Yan Rail Riders had just opened (during Covid!) It’s closed down now and I’m so glad we got a chance to try out this unique contraption! Such an unusual way to explore the Yates County countryside and learn a few new things from our guide.
In 2015, Julie, Calvin, and I delivered mail on the Skaneateles Lake mailboat. It was an unforgettable experience, especially for a long-time postal employee (Julie) a college student, and a day trip writer. Sadly, public tours are no longer offered, reminding me once again that opportunity doesn’t always knock twice.
That year also found me on my annual camping trip to Cape Cod. A pilgrimage I’ll be joyfully making again in a few weeks!
Get ready for August 2026, when my posts and photographs will feature a variety of activities/events in our lovely and vibrant region!
