Travel Tidbit #9

Ann Silverthorn and I had such fun; I’m doing another Tidbit on the National Comedy Center! What a learning experience! Turns out there are as many genres of comedy as of writing, including parody, stand-up, movies, television, and comics.

When I think of USO (United Service Organizations) and comedy, Bob Hope immediately comes to mind. Or Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam. I hadn’t realized how many others (i.e., Drew Carey) have also performed for our troops and hearing the armed service members and comedians talk about how memorable these visits were for both the audience and performers was extremely touching.

Don’t miss

The Blue Room, for adults only! Located on another floor, accessible by elevator, it features the more risqué comedians, such as Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and Richard Pryor. Plenty of female comedians too! However, it’s not all bawdy jokes; as actor/comedian Tommy Davidson points out. Stand-up humor is often used as a way to effect social change by challenging people to see specific issues in a different light.

And-some fun facts about the New York Friars Club, renowned for its raunchy roasts!

Next time I’ll try the Karaoke Bar, political humor exhibit, and making my first meme!
